Will Wyatt Roy’s dreams come true in Longman.
It all started back in March at Caboolture Memorial hall. Wyatt was voted in by 80 local members of Parliament at the Local Grass Roots Democracy preselection. Wyatt was one of three Candidates.
Once voted in he was then ratified by his Liberal National Party at State Council. Initially there was talk of LNP not being happy with Wyatt running for Longman because he was to young but he now has his parties full support and they are 100% behind him. Wyatt has now been in the public eye everywhere. Being on every TV Chanel and in every Newspaper he is now in a more prominent position to battle for Longman seat against Jon Sullivan as his name is well known.
Jon Sullivan being of mature age, a father and been in State and Federal Parliament giving him numerous years of experience.
The three candidates for Longman, Labours Jon Sullivan , Wyatt Roy from LNP and Rodney Blair from the Greens were all present at the Bribie RSL. Questions asked were mainly health. 22, 000 aged pensioners are living in Longman and getting their votes can make or break these candidates that are running for Longman
On the 21st of August it will be up to the voters to decide whether Wyatt is too young to represent us and the issues that we our facing when Wyatt, at such a tender age, has never faced many of them for himself.
His response to being young and not having the experience of a family behind him is that he will listen to families concerns. He will always be available to the public and he will take action.
Labour Jon Sullivan says if re-elected, they will invest money into improving Woofordia which Woodfordia management says this could save the Organisation and keep it going for a long time coming. If we keep Splendour we will truly be the Town of Festivals.
Wyatt believes Labour Jon Sullivan is complacent about his position and is not listening to people about issues such as the cost of living and health care.
My personal experience when talking with Wyatt is that he is exceptional at public speaking, very intelligent and wise beyond his years. He did impress me as he has impressed many other prominent people. He is very focused, people orientated and his motto is to represent with integrity and honesty. In my opinion it will be a first for a politician. I hope if he gets in he is true to his word. I believe the system of politics is so full of deceit and back stabbing that it will be a triumph if this young man can get through it and stay honest, maintaining his integrity.
Wyatt deferred his Queensland University Studies of economics to run for Longman Federal seat. When I asked him if he gets in will he ever be able to finish. He said he only had 6 months to go and that many other politician do one subject a year to get their University degree.
Wyatt’s family were pioneers to the area. From the Puminstone Passage where they started off as orchard growers and when Wyatt was growing up with his parents it became a Strawberry farm. His family were swinging voters and had no interest in politics.
Wyatt said he had chosen politics as he wants to make a difference. He said he knows it sounds cliche but if you want to change something you have to get into Parliament and make a difference within its walls. No point in sitting on the sidelines. He said he will be bringing to the party honesty and integrity and will be held accountable for his actions. He will also be an available member of parliament where people can reach and talk to about their issues. Quote ” I will be held to my word”.
He went on to say that from an early age he recognised that we are all individuals and that his youth could bring a different perspective to the Liberal National Party. As one of his party members said “to be an effective party you have to have greater Diversity in it”.
Wyatt is a passionate and bright young man who I hope he can bring honesty and integrity to Parliament as I feel that’s where it is seriously lacking.
To become a Politician you have to have a very thick skin. Everything about your life is under magnifying glass. As Julia Gillard knows even her earlobes took a battering. Wyatt being a young 20 year old has to skip the partying stage which is what most males do of his age and be role model to all people his age and under. I hope for Wyatt’s sake his enthusiasm and innocence to this system is not trodden on by this farce called politics as these so called leaders claw their way to the top.
I teach my children that honesty is the hard path to take but its the only path if you expect to be happy within yourself. Their leaders and role models in the public eye are bad mouthing each other on Television. Something I don’t wish my children to aspire too. How am I suppose to teach them right from wrong when people in the top jobs are doing exactly the opposite of my teachings.
I urge locals to expect the best from our Members of Parliament not only for their policies that effect us but also from their behaviour.
If Wyatt gets in and sticks to his beliefs and changes how politics works, he will be there for the long haul as he is so young. He will also make history if voted in by being the youngest to get a seat in Federal Parliament. It will take years to change this system and age is on his side.

What a joy to have young Wyatt Roy – someone willing to bring back integrity to politics – running for the Longman seat. I enjoyed your
article Debbie and agree with you … we need to show (not just tell)our children the right way to behave, and with our current leading politicians making empty promises and undermining each other what message is that sending the young people of today who will be our future leaders tomorrow???
I’m not familiar with the Woodford Newspaper, but the standard of writing in this article sugests it was not writen by a journalist. What people want to know about is how politicians will handle local interests in Federal parliament.
I’ve no doubt Wyatt is a nice chap with school debating wins a many.
However, experiene, strength of character and respect come with maturity – and that man is Jon Sullivan. Without a doubt
Woodford Newspaper is all about Woodford (+ surrounding areas) and its people. The main aim is to share information amongst ourselves and discuss what affects us. If you want to read a well written, polished beyond the truth, political articles, then this is not the place for you.
We all know that a politician can say whatever they like to get elected, however in the end it is their character that will tell us if they can stick to these promises.
We welcome everyone’s political opinion and this article was centered around Wyatt Roy. Jon Sullivan is most welcome to contact us to arrange an interview, however it will be about the person he is and not focusing on his policies.
I sincerely hope people make the effort to meet up with these candidates and investigate their potential for themselves. It is not the age of the candidate, the cultural background, or even the policies that make the difference. It’s the gut feeling you get when you know someone is honest and hard working.
Mitz,
I’d be delighted to undertake a similar interview. Thank you for the opportunity. There is no contact phone number that I can find on your site so I would appreciate it if you could contact Avalon Mackellar at 5428 7755 who will be able to arrange a time with you that suits us both.
Regards,
Jon Sullivan
No problem Jon I will get in contact with you in the next few days.
Mitz,
Are you suggesting that because your article is riddled with grammatical errors, including a stream of ill-formed sentences, it is somehow more truthful than well-written articles?
If a writer cannot be trusted with mastering their grammer and spelling, how can they be trusted with finding the truth?
Further, to tell a reader they should simply go elsewhere if they want a better job is a poor excuse for the fact that your article does nothing more than take the words of a political candidate at face value.
Instead of probing for the truth, readers are left with naive waffle.
For a political candidate to avoid any semblence of scrutiny in an article is almost unheard of and leaves the reader wondering, why?
I do not believe it is a matter of resources or experience, rather a lack of willingness to give readers with anything beyond political rhetoric.
Where is the duty to your readers to help them cut through the political spin and decide who to vote for?
Hi Megan,
I agree that the article is riddled with grammatical errors and we apologise for that, however this does not mean that it is not truthful.
This online newspaper accepts writing from anyone in the community and we welcome all styles of writing. No we are not journalists; we are “mere” members of this community sharing a view.
If you would like to supply our readers with another article scrutinising these political candidates I will gladly organise an interview with both Wyatt Roy and Jon Sullivan for you. I would welcome a more serious approach if you can supply me with one?
Even though the article is not well written I like the way it is done. I think this website is great for us “mere” country folk in Woodford.
Hi Meagan,
I think since I am the one who wrote the article, I should let you know where I was coming from. I freely admit my English is not up to journalistic standard. However my writing does come from the heart and although I may not have the correct grammar it doesn’t mean that what I have to say is of less importance. I am a photographer by profession and to be able to put a story to my photos has been a real enjoyment for me. I am improving my grammar as I go along and this is a work in progress.
I don’t apologise for expressing myself but I do apologise to Jon Sullivan because it appeared that I put him in the category of ‘dishonest politicians’. This is not the case. My observations were on what is happening now via the media, with politicians fighting for the top position. In my opinion it is a rare person who can get to the top (ie: Prime Minister) without being involved in some deceit and dishonesty during this process.
As Jon has commented that he would like an interview with our paper, we will now endeavour to interview him and get his personal story of how he came to be elected in State and Federal Parliament and how he intends on improving Longman.
I hope when the article is written he is not too offended by my grammar skills. I will try to tell his story as ardently as what I did when writing about Wyatt.
I do hope Meagan, you keep following our Woodford Newspaper as we welcome your criticism. It’s the only way we can improve our newspaper and ourselves. I will say that judging by the number of hits we have had on our online newspaper(especially on our article on Wyatt, as it was one of the more popular stories ), that people are enjoying our non-professional journalism,a niche in the market that perhaps has not been tapped into as yet.
Deb
Thanks for your prompt response Mitz and I think it is good you are giving people a forum to talk about local topics.
Deb, I do think you are missing my main point. These are political candidates running for the highest office in the country not just human interest stories. It is not just about the grammer, but the fact you are so strongly pushing the line that Wyatt Roy is on a one man campaign to bring honesty and integrity to politics.
I don’t think you have to be a journalist to give such a statement during an election campaign a critical treatment.
I appreciate you have improved the article somewhat since it was initially uploaded and have taken the feedback onboard.
Just a few factual points but perhaps you could replace the words: Local Grass Roots Democracy preselection with just `preselection’ as there is no such official title.
Also, Wyatt’s preselection was ratified by the LNP, not the `Democratic Party.’
- Megan
To Meagan – I would truly enjoy an article by you Meagan on your views as a Woodford local during this election. This newspaper is run like a community forum. There are no skills required other than to have an opinion that you feel would benefit the community and your obvious knowledge would make for good reading. Thanks.
I’m not too happy with the major parties always getting the votes. I do believe that people just vote for the party or people that represent the party without knowing or having any input in party policy. On the whole the voting public is too complacent and to lazy to stand up to any form of government. The major parties are way out of step with what the public really needs or wants. Wyatt Roy, you had better step up to the plate do your best or you’ll be hearing from me.
