Neurum Creek Bridge Versus The Recent Floods?
Obviously Neurum Creek was in need of a new bridge. You can see in the photo below that the water was just lapping over the road in March of 2010. This photo was taken when the water had subsided, prior to the construction of the new bridge.
The next photo below, taken on the same day and only a minute later, shows a picture of the new Neurum Creek Bridge being constructed. This shows the level of the water when we last had our major rains in March. As I stated before, the rain had subsided slightly so this was not even at its highest level. Even though these rains were not heavy compared to the ones we have now, the water level was still awfully close to the bottom of the new bridge.
The following picture of the new Neurum Creek Bridge underwater, was sent into the Woodford newspaper along with the following quote.
“Quite simply, the new bridge over Neurum Creek represents a quantum leap in road safety,”
… Except when its under half a metre of water as it is at present.
Well at least now it matches the safety standard of the still yet to be reconstructed section of Neurum Road.
This quote from Cr Adrian Raedal, “Quite simply, the new bridge over Neurum Creek represents a quantum leap in road safety,” was extracted from an earlier media release published at the opening of the New bridge. See the original article New Bridge Unites Two Regions.
We know that this flooding is not a common occurrence, however where is the bridge now? Why wasn’t it built higher in the first place to avoid any possible flooding reaching its surface?

I guess we now know that someone is just making a menace of themselves with this being sent through. Now I don’t normally respond to rubbish like this but at this one I took offense. If the person hiding behind their comments would come forward this is what I would say. MBRC put in about a million dollars as did Somerset Council so this is what two million dollars buys you – over the last 24hrs your could put in a five million dollar bridge and it would still be over. We have spent over two million dollars on that section of road so far with more to come. There is estimated to be another couple of million to be spent on the sections not done yet. So it is coming. Council has to prioritise jobs according need including the number of vehicles, state of the road etc and value for money for it’s residents. The residents chose to move there when the road was in a much worst state of repair but now want it gold plated? I agree it needs to be done and asap and have been pushing for it to be done and that’s how weve been able to get it done in stages but I won’t toyed with by someone hiding behind an anonymous email. So I challenge the person to come out and say it to my face.
Well spoken Adrian. Being a local, I too take offence from this article. Most Neurum residents are trapped in on their flooded properties and cannot get to the bridge to take such a photo so it would have to be someone who can get through on the alternate route from Woodford to Neurum Road – given the different photos of varying flood levels, I can only assume this was a well calculated act of cruel intentions to make trouble for either the Moreton Bay Councillor(and considering the bridge construction took place under the supervision of Somerset Council as well as Moreton Bay Council, it’s pretty obvious Cr Raedel was targeted)OR this article is an attempt to stir trouble between the Neurum residents and the local Council. Please, if you have a problem, then take the matter up with the Councillor himself, it’s only fair for him and for the residents who are being blamed for this article.
Why does it matter who took the photos. It is obviously a concerned rate payer and I am sure they have every right to bring up the subject!
It is you Adrian that has to face the public and answer the questions, not the rate payer. You are the chosen one and you should just take it on the chin.
So you state that the road will be fixed. That’s all you had to do, make another promise to smooth it over. You do not have to call someone a coward (in so many words) for using their right to FREE SPEECH.
I thank this website for being brave enough to publish this. Why don’t we just bring it all out in the open? Why does it have to be discussed behind closed doors????
I think this is a great way to see a problem getting solved first hand. Adrian could have used this to his advantage instead of turning it into sour grapes.
As for this being a “calculated act of cruel intentions” towards Adrian??? Are you kidding me?
Fair enough, Anon, it shouldn’t matter who took the photos but unfortunately it has caused some ill feelings between residents out here and the Councillor. If you truly want something done about the state of the roads and the bridges, you should contact the Councillor directly just like every other person does – you might also find that other regional councils could help with your concerns too. If it wasn’t a calculated act of cruel intentions (yes, the phrasing is a bit extreme, but none the less..) why was Adrian the only one mentioned when other Councillors are also involved?
I actually took the first two pictures when we had some minor floods in March. At the time I observed the bridge and thought it was seriously low considering that the water had already subsided. That is the truth!
The last picture and the quote was sent in by someone, really not necessary for their name to be revealed.
Thanks from the residents concerned Mitz – I agree that there’s no harm in getting issues out into the open and of course there’s plenty to be questioned on the state of our roads, but in this particular case others were being blamed for the post. You’re absolutely right, there’s no reason that any name should be revealed, it’s their right to privacy; but maybe “Anonymous” could consider contacting the Councillor privately anyway. I’ve also asked if it’s possible for you guys to remove my second
response here – it was accidentally sent before I could edit it; the wording has turned out incorrect, giving the statement an entirely different meaning.
No problem Jackie. Removed.
To people who don’t know the area, this might look like one of those “typical council moments”. But the new TWO-lane bridge has replaced that tacky old one where you couldn’t even see opposing traffic coming! And I drove over the new bridge today. Yes, it goes under water on occasion, but it’s still standing when the water recedes! As for the author’s question “why wasn’t it built higher?” I say this: there are so many other parts of Neurum Road/Villeneuve that flood. What would be the bloody point of this bridge being flood-proof when the rest of the road between Woodford and Kilcoy is flooded and therefore inaccessible anyway? Do you propose we install a whole new road on stilts or something? Quit your b****ing. Honestly!
I am a local, I do drive down that road, and my first thought about the bridge was “hmm why didn’t they make it higher?”
What’s wrong with that?
I am pretty sure that your opinion is not the only one that counts and that is the spice of life. I would rather not be boring and simply think like everyone else just because I am expected to.
Thanks for your input though.
Mitz, the above comments were most likely directed at the “Anonymous” Author mentioned in Adrian’s response.
Mitz, I’d like to apologise to you and the person who had the guts to make a stand and assist you with letting people know what is really happening between the feelings of council issues between the residents of our local communities.
I stuck up for the Councillor as I had given him more credit than I should have – this was pure ignorance on my part, plain stupid of me really, especially since I am one of the many locals having to face these issues on our roads etc everyday too. My lack of judgement in this case was appalling and it will never happen again – in future my job will be performed correctly when approached with similar complaints from concerned residents.
I’d also like to share with you Mitz (not relating to the above article)recently a couple of publications (a letter to the editor about a tourist info centre and an article about the state of a range appeared with “anonymous”) For privacy reasons, as you know, some request to remain anonymous, which is their right. An elderly lady has told me she has been ordered not to speak to the local media as they are seen to be “rubbishing” the council rep if they do open their mouths. The lady was distressed therefore revealed who the sender of the anonymous letter was in fear that she would be in trouble for expressing her opinion. A request was also sent to reveal the author of an anonymous letter about the range, the paper it appears in won’t reveal these details to the public, whoever it was who wanted the names must have tracked the author down as a gentleman said he was approached and “warned” not to talk to the local media. Sounds like a typical case of “bullying” and “harassment” doesn’t it?!
With a comment such as “say it to my face” in the way it is sometimes worded and because of residents like me who appeared supportive of certain issues, isn’t it any wonder people prefer to remain anonymous? What worries me is that people are fearing to even do that considering they are being tracked down by the people responsible for the issues written about – so much for freedom of speech.
Hi Jackie
It’s not just Councilors and Politicians that need to be exposed and take responsibility for their actions..
At the moment I am exposing Telstra and Virgin Blue on one of my other websites. If everyone keeps their mouth shut then these people just keep getting away with it!
If I have made a mistake then I will admit it. This is the finest act a person can do. Stand up and take the blame, not “play the blaming game”. Of course I try not to reach that stage first though.
I will not sit back and agree to be part of the pack and I believe that everyone is very much allowed to have an opinion. After all, the councilors and Politicians are there to represent us, not themselves.
As for the other companies that rip us off everyday, they all need to learn that every customer is important and will matter in the end.
The internet will expose people for who they are and what they are doing. Even the Commonwealth bank is feeling the pinch.
Thanks Mitz, keep doing what you’re doing. It takes strength (and even a public attack of lies on one’s character at times!)but nobody should have to feel manipulated or threatened by being told to “keep their mouths shut” It’s important that honesty and the genuine concern for people’s rights and the safety of their children are kept open (after all, our future generation is the reason why we do the things we do), otherwise these “people” will continue to get away with everything they are trying to cover up. Quite frankly I’ve had enough of everything, just like everybody else has.
