Black Wattle’s place in the ecosystem

This afternoon whilst out in the garden I was looking at a very sickly Black Wattle, (Acacia melanoxylon). I often hear people say how useless these wattle trees are and that they should be removed as they will die in a few years anyway.

There are several native frogs within the Maleny area which share a dangerous resemblance to the introduced Cane Toad. I am certain that someof them have experienced some 3-iron amphibian disposal into the neighbors yard on more than one occasion. Last month my sister was happy to see so many dead ‘cane toads’ in her swimming pool, only to sadly find out they were a native Ornate Burrowing Frog! The World’s Smallest Glider
This is what turned up in a bucket of water last weekend. At first, I thought it may have been a mouse but on closer inspection I noticed its feather-like tail which could only mean one thing…..a Feathertail Glider. I have never seen one before and although they are
relatively common they are rarely seen.  More often, Feathertail gliders are encountered only after they have been brought in by the family cat or during tree clearing operations.
