LNP boost teacher aides for our Prep kids

A CanDo LNP Government will revitalise front line education services by boosting Prep teacher aides across Queensland schools to ensure our children get the best start, LNP Member Andrew Powell, said today.
“Under the tired, 20-year Labor government, Queensland children are languishing at the bottom of the nation for literacy and numeracy.
“The LNP wants to turn that totally around. By boosting early childhood education, we can start to lift numeracy and literacy standards at the time it really counts.
“Children in Glass House deserve more personalised attention from their teacher to grow …

“Today is an important day to raise awareness of violence against women, it’s also a day for every man to swear to never harm or condone violence against women,” LNP Leader Campbell Newman said.

Speed camera revenue should go back to road safety in the local community

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell has responded to community feedback by calling on the Government to redirect funds raised from new speed cameras along the D’Aguilar Highway back to road safety in the local community.
“It is disappointing to see there are some irresponsible drivers who choose to speed along this road or drive in a reckless manner and perhaps installing speed cameras is one way of warning these drivers to be careful.
“We are all too aware of the accidents that have occurred along this road and sadly many local …

Fair go for commuters

Member for Glass House has welcomed the announcement by Campbell Newman that a CanDo LNP Government would reduce the cost of commuting for loyal public transport users by reintroducing discounted weekly fares for go-card users.

Mr Powell said regular commuters who used go-cards to travel on buses, trains, and ferries in South East Queensland nine times in a week would be rewarded with any additional trips free.

“This will be a real saving and an incentive to use public transport to and from work, with the trip home on Friday free, and …

Urgent upgrades needed for D’Aguilar highway

On the back of increasing community frustration, Member for Glass House Andrew Powell MP has sponsored another petition calling the Government to action over the much needed safety upgrades to the D’Aguilar Highway.
“Locals have communicated to me time and time again their desperation and frustration that this Government continues to ignore their pleas to improve safety standards along this road.
“Honestly, I feel like a broken record!  The Government knows this road is a hazard yet they refuse to hand over the money that is needed to make necessary upgrades and …

D’Aguilar Highway Petition Update

Mr POWELL (Glass House—LNP) (3.03 pm):
This week I tabled both an e-petition and a paper petition from concerned community members regarding the state of the D’Aguilar Highway. Interestingly, I did this almost two years to the day since I first did that and, frustratingly, the government still has not addressed the safety on this increasingly busy state road. Two years ago the constituents of Glass House and I were calling for urgent safety upgrades to the D’Aguilar Highway, particularly between Caboolture and Woodford.
To be honest, I had high hopes. We …

Bruce Highway median closures safer but not good news for businesses and residents

The news that the Bells Creek and Roys Road median access points will be closed along the Bruce Highway in the very near future will lead to greater safety but has also only increased the frustration of local business operators, residents and local politicians.
Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell has expressed his disappointment that it has had to come to this.
“There’s no doubt that this will make the Highway safer.  But it should never have been needed.  These intersections are notorious black spots.  They’ve been slated for upgrades which have …

Julia Gillard’s unnecessary and costly $9 billion tax will Hit Queensland families

“The Labor/Greens carbon tax will drive up prices, threaten jobs and do nothing for the environment,” Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said today.
“Australia’s forgotten families are already struggling and the carbon tax will make a bad situation worse with a $515 a year hit on their cost of living.  And that’s just for starters.  The people of Queensland will pay more for everything under Julia Gillard’s carbon tax – the biggest and most punitive carbon tax in the world.
The carbon tax means:

a $9 billion …

Future funding confirmed for Glasshouse intersection

Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP, has welcomed the news that funding has been allocated for the future upgrade of the Steve Irwin Way between Bowen Road and Amy Drive in Glasshouse Mountains.
“This is something I have lobbied for since I announced my campaign for the seat of Glass House so to say I am thrilled is really putting it mildly.
“As the local member since 2009, I have seen this community grow and prosper steadily in that time and have no doubt this upgrade will have an enormous  positive …

Glass House Budget Priority List

Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP, will be watching with keen anticipation as the Bligh Labor Government hands down the state’s budget next week.
“Overall the Glass House electorate was let down by the state government in last year’s budget allocation.  I’m expecting better this year.
“Top of my priority list is without question funding for the North Coast Rail Duplication.  The news last year that continuation of the duplication from Beerburrum to Nambour had been delayed until 2031 was a major blow to commuters.
“This vital infrastructure is the centerpiece of …

“This campaign focuses on raising awareness of the risks that women face in their fight against heart disease.
